The first small working group on the locomotive took place on 6th February and involved much preparation, removal of the motion, needle-gunning, sanding, undercoating and furthe preparation work including cleaning and clearing the goods shed. At present it is our intention to have the first open volunteer working party from 10.00am on SATURDAY 12th FEBRUARY 2022 in the goods shed at Port St. Mary. The Association are very keen to advance this first phase of work so the reassembly can be completed. The frames of the locomotive were delivered back to the railway today and are now stored in the goods shed at Port St. Mary Station to allow volunteer work to commence. A visit has been made by Association representatives to ascertain what will be required. Our volunteers will be on site to begin work in de-greasing and de-scaling the inside of the frames prior to applying the paint. It must be stressed that our volunteer activities will not include the final painting which will be done professionally. Can you help us? Another working party of Association volunteers were on site at Port St. Mary goods shed yesterday where work was concentrated on refitting the firebox doors in the cab and the completion of painting the rear cowcatcher and main frames. There are seven holes on each side of the smokebox, where it is bolted to the cylinders. Due to the presence of asbestos (removed during decontamination work in 2020) in the top of one of the cylinders, these had to be gas cut off. To complete bolting the boiler down we cleaned out the slag and spatter with an air tool, to allow bolts to be refitted. Work on painting the various items of ironwork from the cab has been completed and these items will be refitted soon. Work continues with the aim of the locomotive being ready to take part in the 150th anniversary celebrations in July.
