3rd MAY PROGRESS REPORT ON No.5

Another evening working party took place last night at Port St. Mary with Association volunteers continuing their work on No.5 concentrating on reassembly and painting; in addition to working inside the frames as we get closer to the point when the boiler can be refitted, the first coat of green undercoat was applied to the fireman's' side tank and various other areas.  The next working group will be on SATURDAY 7th MAY in the goods shed; as ever if you can assist in our endeavours we would be delighted to hear from you on granttaylor@manx.net

PROGRESS REPORT, 18th FEBRUARY

Another working party of Association volunteers were on site at Port St. Mary goods shed yesterday where work was concentrated on refitting the firebox doors in the cab and the completion of painting the rear cowcatcher and main frames.  There are seven holes on each side of the smokebox, where it is bolted to the cylinders.  Due to the presence of asbestos (removed during decontamination work in 2020) in the top of one of the cylinders, these had to be gas cut off.  To complete bolting the boiler down we cleaned out the slag and spatter with an air tool, to allow bolts to be refitted.  Work on painting the various items of ironwork from the cab has been completed and these items will be refitted soon.  Work continues with the aim of the locomotive being ready to take part in the 150th anniversary celebrations in July.

WORK ON THE BOILER 18th OCTOBER

Now that peak season and the busier times have passed, the opportunity was taken on Tuesday 18th October to return to volunteer working on No.5, concentrating on the boiler which is stored on the well wagon in the carriage shed at Port Erin.  Preparation and undercoating in green was carried out as well as some ancillary work to the smokebox and attention to the firebox.  The end result is a green undercoat making the boiler now largely ready to be returned to the frames which remain in the goods shed at Port St. Mary.  It is hoped to continue more regular parties once the full season has closed on Sunday 30th October.  Please contact granttaylor@manx.net or call the chairman Bill Cubbon on +44 (0) 1624 823682 if you can assist..
