CONTINUING WORKS 26th NOVEMBER

Yesterday's volunteer working party on No.5 spent time applying a second coat of black paint to the pony truck and a first coat behind the driving wheels on the drivers' side.  This involved having to do a section and then move the engine to move the spokes to get to the unpainted sections.  A top coat of green was also applied to the repaired fireman's side cylinder cladding and the cylinder drain cock rod was refitted, enabling the boiler to be dropped in.  The next working party is proposed for SATURDAY 3rd DECEMBER at Port St. Mary goods shed; if you can assist or would like to get involved please contact granttaylor@manx.net

PROGRESS REPORT, 18th FEBRUARY

Another working party of Association volunteers were on site at Port St. Mary goods shed yesterday where work was concentrated on refitting the firebox doors in the cab and the completion of painting the rear cowcatcher and main frames.  There are seven holes on each side of the smokebox, where it is bolted to the cylinders.  Due to the presence of asbestos (removed during decontamination work in 2020) in the top of one of the cylinders, these had to be gas cut off.  To complete bolting the boiler down we cleaned out the slag and spatter with an air tool, to allow bolts to be refitted.  Work on painting the various items of ironwork from the cab has been completed and these items will be refitted soon.  Work continues with the aim of the locomotive being ready to take part in the 150th anniversary celebrations in July.

FIRST INITIAL VOLUNTEER WORK GROUP

The first small working group on the locomotive took place on 6th February and involved much preparation, removal of the motion, needle-gunning, sanding, undercoating and furthe preparation work including cleaning and clearing the goods shed. At present it is our intention to have the first open volunteer working party from 10.00am on SATURDAY 12th FEBRUARY 2022 in the goods shed at Port St. Mary.  The Association are very keen to advance this first phase of work so the reassembly can be completed. If you feel you can get involved with our work please contact granttaylor@manx.net for further information.  There is a substantial amount of work to be done before the boiler (in store at Port Erin) can be reunited with the frames and reassembly can take place. WORK ON THE BOILER 18th OCTOBER

Now that peak season and the busier times have passed, the opportunity was taken on Tuesday 18th October to return to volunteer working on No.5, concentrating on the boiler which is stored on the well wagon in the carriage shed at Port Erin.  Preparation and undercoating in green was carried out as well as some ancillary work to the smokebox and attention to the firebox.  The end result is a green undercoat making the boiler now largely ready to be returned to the frames which remain in the goods shed at Port St. Mary.  It is hoped to continue more regular parties once the full season has closed on Sunday 30th October.  Please contact granttaylor@manx.net or call the chairman Bill Cubbon on +44 (0) 1624 823682 if you can assist..
