FURTHER PROGRESSION, 7th JANUARY

Excellent progress was made at Port St. Mary on 7th January with all the studs on the backhead of the boiler in the cab having been cleaned up, ready for re-fitting.  A replacement draincock rods and pins were re-fitted.  Elsewhere, The cab steps and back sand-pipe on the driver's side were removed, with the aid of a small propane torch.  The back of the steps were then refurbished with fresh paint. The reason for the steps' removal was to enable the frames on that side to be needle-gunned and painted, the section under the coal bunker between the frames was also started to be dealt with in this way. Also receiving attention was the steam turret on top of the boiler, which was needle gunned and painted in red oxide.  Undercoat was also applied to the exterior of the cab and roof. Another working party of Association volunteers were on site at Port St. Mary goods shed yesterday where work was concentrated on refitting the firebox doors in the cab and the completion of painting the rear cowcatcher and main frames.  There are seven holes on each side of the smokebox, where it is bolted to the cylinders.  Due to the presence of asbestos (removed during decontamination work in 2020) in the top of one of the cylinders, these had to be gas cut off.  To complete bolting the boiler down we cleaned out the slag and spatter with an air tool, to allow bolts to be refitted.  Work on painting the various items of ironwork from the cab has been completed and these items will be refitted soon.  Work continues with the aim of the locomotive being ready to take part in the 150th anniversary celebrations in July.

FIRST INITIAL VOLUNTEER WORK GROUP

The first small working group on the locomotive took place on 6th February and involved much preparation, removal of the motion, needle-gunning, sanding, undercoating and furthe preparation work including cleaning and clearing the goods shed. At present it is our intention to have the first open volunteer working party from 10.00am on SATURDAY 12th FEBRUARY 2022 in the goods shed at Port St. Mary.  The Association are very keen to advance this first phase of work so the reassembly can be completed. If you feel you can get involved with our work please contact granttaylor@manx.net for further information.  There is a substantial amount of work to be done before the boiler (in store at Port Erin) can be reunited with the frames and reassembly can take place.
